Our school The Quebec dojo, founded in 1988 with the help of the city of Greenfield Park, is a lasting testament to the teachings of Kyoshi Robert Lafond. What started as an expansion of the city's sportive program developped over the years, with Kyoshi Lafond handing the responsability to two of his student, Pierre Leduc and Doug Smithman. Sensei Leduc and Sensei Smithman ran the school for many years together with both of them having the common goal of giving kids an alternative to hanging at the local mall and streets, and providing a safe and structured practice environment. Sensei Leduc left this world on april 24th, 2010 but will always be remembered, as this dojo continues forward in his honor. According to the traditional teachings of Kyoshi Lafond and modeled after the late O'Sensei Richard Kim, we strive to keep the tradition. Sensei Doug Smithman is responsible for the continuation of O'Sensei Kim's legacy. |
Your school: what karate can be for you
The benefits in learning Karate, in addition to perfecting the techniques of Karate, include the development of friendship and mutually fair relations, improved physical fitness, enhanced physical and body control, mutual respect, and the simultaneous development of both physical and mental strength. Karate is a discipline that anyone can learn if they persist in a serious, planned and organized manner by combining physical and mental training. In Karate, a person is given the opportunity to make the most of his/her innate energy. The training that is given at the Dojo makes it possible for the student to achieve a level of combined technical and mental mastery that only Karate can provide. The techniques of Karate teaches us to utilize all our resources to develop extraordinary force, both physical and mental. Despite its martial origins, Karate has evolved into a discipline for mind and body much opposed to violence. The study of Karate fosters peace, harmony, the building of a healthy society based on men and women of character, self-confidence and respect for others. The use of Karate skills for purposes other than the strictest self defense, contradict the most basic tenets of Karate-do. In conclusion Karate is at the same time a remarkably complete form of physical exercise, an exciting competitive sport and an extremely effective form of self defense. |

Gichin Funakoshi « You may train for a long time, but if you merely move your hands and feet and jump up and down like a puppet, learning karate is not very different from learning a dance. You will never have reached the heart of the matter; you will have failed to grasp the quintessence of karate. » |
